Frogmore Papermill — Hertfordshire
Frogmore is the oldest mechanised papermill in the world and is run by the Apsley Paper Trail charitable trust.
The bulk of the work focused on repairs to the large softwood trusses of the 1906 machine hall which houses the Fourdrinier paper machine.
The significant decay was to the tie-beams and principal rafters. Replacement timber was sustainably sourced, UK grown Douglas Fir. Grain pattern, orientation and moisture contents were all well matched with the existing timber.
Testimonial
It was wonderful working with Breakspear Conservation on this project. Their care and attention to detail will ensure this industrial heritage is secure for future generations. Architects should rejoice that craftsmen in England are still caring for these buildings, developing and practicing these important skills.
