The repairs were required to the rear of the house where an 18th century cross-wing had been built adjacent to (and literally off) an earlier 17th century cross-wing. A valley gutter was formed between the two gables and its subsequent failure had caused significant decay.
As well as significant longstanding decay, previous interventions had also caused damage as seen in the ‘before’ photo. The tie-beam had been notched out (from a depth of 220mm down to just 45mm) to accommodate a window. The brickwork had been laid in an incompatible cement mortar.
Following a successful application for listed building consent, we were able to carry out essential repairs to timber-frame, remove the modern impervious materials, use breathable hemp/lime mix for the infill panels, replace two windows and reinstate the weatherboarding.
